Oghu Guardians

Oghu Guardians

Rob Lane

This month marks the beginning of a new era for Mierce Miniatures; not only are we bringing you in stock physical battle hosts (as well as digital) each month, we're also adding a new Brutal Beast tier that will feature a huge monster!

More on that later. For now, feast your eyes on July's battle host for Darklands, the Oghu Guardians of the Albainn - comprising four oghur warchiefs, seventeen oghur warriors and three moroghur monsters, all sculpted by Ivan Flaman!

Here's a snippet of the moroghurond, Bromogg, in scale with a moroghur and oghur from this month and a human warrior from January's Albainn. As you can see, he's absolutely huge!

Physical Miniatures In Stock

This month is the first battle host to be released physically at the same time as the digital version; these guys are in stock and ready to go!

You can purchase them singly, as units or as the battle host itself - and while these physical hosts give you a great discount, typically around half the price of purchasing the miniatures within individually, they will be strictly limited edition each month to ten sets only. So get them now if you want them!

Head over to the Albainn page to grab this month's host as physical products.

The battle hosts from the previous months of this year will also be released physically, in the middle of each month, so watch out for an announcement on those soon.

Oghu Guardians

Well over ten feet tall, strong and doughty, the oghur - together with their smaller cousins the oghurithne and the giant moroghur - are the bulwark that guard the oghu circles against the enemies of Alba, which are many, for the Norse, the Fomoraic of Baalor and of Conand, the Érainn and the Anglecynn, among others, all desire the power of these incredible monoliths.

For the oghu stones are vulnerable, their power easily shattered; they must be protected at all costs; so each oghur carries one of these stones upon their backs, shards of a greater whole that both absorb and project sorcerous power, enabling them to move between these stone rings at will and to defend against the malevolent magics that would seek to harm them.

This month's battle host contains:

  • Gair Gudhlagg, Oghur Uhmaer
  • Morgair Gudhlagg, Oghur Uhmaer
  • Orlagg, Oghur Uhmaer
  • Orlagg, Oghur Uhmaer [Pin Up]*
  • Oghu Stoneshields, Gair Oghur Unit (7x warriors)
  • Oghu Stoneguards, Morgair Oghur Unit (7x warriors)
  • Oghu Grimguards, Morgair Moroghur Unit (3x warriors)

*The pin up loyalty rewards are only available if you subscribe through our webstore

Gair Gudhlagg, Oghur Uhmaer

Commanding the Oghu Guardians is the mighty Gudhlagg, a grizzled oghur warchief from the mountains of Cait, standing on a 60mm base and around 60mm tall.

Morgair Gudhlagg, Oghur Uhmaer

Available in shieldwall as Gair Gudhlagg or great weapon as Morgair Gudhlagg, he is ably assisted by his, er, glamorous assistant, Orlagg - a female oghur warchief, rarely seen on the battlefield but perfectly capable of braining the enemy regardless!

Orlagg, Oghur Uhmaer

The meat of the Oghu Guardians is, of course, the oghur warriors, who stand on 60mm bases and are around 60-70mm tall to the topp of their heads. Again, they are available in shieldwall format as the Oghu Stoneshields...

Oghu Guardians, Albainn (Fortriu) Oghur Battle Host

...or in great weapon format as the Oghu Stoneguards!

The stars of the show, however, are undoubtedly the moroghur. Giant ogres of the far north, standing on 80mm bases and around 100mm tall each, the Oghu Grimguards are perfectly capable of holding the line against barbarian hordes or smashing an enemy wall to pieces!

Who Are the Albainn?

The Albainn are the people the Romans called the Pictii, the Painted, who inhabit the far north of modern-day Scotland. The Picts were a fairly savage people but their civilisation was well-developed, and many historians believe that the Britons and the Picts were one and the same. Certainly, until the Anglo-Saxons arrived and conquered the northlands, the Picts and the Britons lived next to each other and mixed freely.

Dun Durn

In Darklands the Albainn are savage, warlike humans, usually painted for war and sometimes naked. Skilled with spear and shield, sling and crossbow, and with their allies the giants and ogres of the far north mountains they defend Alba from their invading foes, especially the Fomoraic and the Norse, and whilst they are somewhat insular the Albainn are not above revenge raids and annexing territory near their lands.

The giants - massive, ancient beings of legend - and their smaller cousins the oghur and the oghurithne revere the oghu stones, the stone circles that dot the landscape of Alba, stones that act as conduits for earth power and that also resist sorcery. Many humans, hoping to find favour with the ogres, ape those beliefs and worship the stones alongside them, but this does not sit well with the Christians amongst the Albainn, of which there are many in the south.

Fortriu

There are seven Kingdoms of Alba but the realm with the most influence and power is Fortriu. A bleak yet beautiful landscape of forest, heath, hill and mountain, Fortriu is an unforgiving place and although it is not barren it is certainly not easy to grow many of the crops found in the rich, fertile south. Instead the Albainn rear tough, hardy sheep and other grazing animals, mostly to eat but also to trade with, and fish the coasts of their land.

The largest city, and the seat of the Fortrean King Talorc son of Uuid (who many claim should be King of all the Albainn), is Dun Durn. A mighty walled fortress atop an ancient, silenced volcano, it offers commanding views and is a bastion any invading army would find difficult to capture - as the Dál Riatans and the Northumbras have found to their cost.

You can learn more about the Albainn on the Mierce Miniatures webstore and in the Lands of Darkness kindred guide!

More in July...

As mentioned above, July will also see the start of the new Brutal Beast tier, which brings you - both physically and digitally - a powerful monster from the same kindred as the battle host. Bromogg should be available next week - watch for an announcement then. Going forward, the monsters will be available at the same time as the battle host.

As well as that, we'll hopefully be able to produce a battle host from the last few months physically before we get to August. We're not sure yet which one it will be, but stay tuned...

August Ahead

The absolutely incredible demilegionaries of the Byzantii await you lucky Miercenaries next month. Watch out for some sneak peeks over the next few weeks!
