Reccaswinth - the Young King of Toledo - rules the Visigoths with an iron hand and jointly with Chindaswinth the Cruel, his father: so named for his tyrannical character, for executing would-be usurpers, nobles and their families, and confiscating their lands and property without due cause. Yet such cruelty has brought peace and order, for in a score of years his people have lived without fear and in law, able to trade prosperously with other kingdoms, live harmoniously with their neighbours and finally escape the shackles the Romanii had imposed upon their society and their nature. Sometimes a strong hand - aye, cruel maybe, but just - is needed to bring the best out of all, and never more so for a people that worship, and proudly become, the aramanna of legend.
