Persecutors of Var

Persecutors of Var

Rob Lane

August is upon us, fellow Miercenaries, so it is time for the half-demons of Infernus to persecute your enemies - and it's all in stock and ready to go!

Rafael Callegari's skills - already brilliant when he first began working with us - are improving at an exponential rate. The demilegionarii and the canesinferni are, we believe, his best work for us yet; and that's saying something. The Persecutors of Var battle host, containing three distinct commanders, two units of infantry, a unit of cavalry and a unit of beasts are utterly superb!

It being August, we also have a new monster for to dominate your tabletop with. Tarus is a mighty magnibehema, a giant beast from the pits of Infernus, ready to charge into your enemies and break their battle line! We'll concentrate on him in another blog post next week, because he deserves his own spot!

Physical Miniatures In Stock

Like the Oghu Guardians of last month, the Persecutors of Var are in stock and ready to go!

You can purchase the miniatures within each unit singly, as units or as the battle host itself - and while these physical hosts give you a great discount, typically around half the price of purchasing the miniatures within individually, they will be strictly limited edition each month to ten sets only. So get them now if you want them!

50/25% off until Monday the 10th of August

Head over to the New Releases page to grab this month's host as physical products, and remember - for the first week of so of a battle host release, the individual miniatures are set at 50% off (for resin miniatures like Tarus) and 25% off for Grey Wulf resin miniatures (all the battle host). That means if you just want a couple of these awesome new warriors or units, rather than all of them, you still get a nice little discount.

Persecutors of Var

The demilegionarii are the half-demon, half-human infantry of both Byzantia and Infernus, standing from six to ten feet tall, armed with fired axes and tempered swords; their armour and skin slowly fusing, their horns growing and their knowledge maturing, they fight to destroy the enemies of mankind and their creators.

Changed irrevocably by their pilgrimage to the Black Gate of Infernus and beyond, enlightened by the wisdom of the ancient lords of that blackened land-under-land, each demilegionarius wends slowly from man to demon over time. This can take hundreds of years; in some just a few, perhaps dependant upon the spirit of the warrior; warlike and malevolent spirits change much faster than more even-tempered ones. Once begun, once such understanding is made, this process cannot be ended, except in death; but as their skin hardens, their armour fuses to bone and their animus is fired, demilegionarii grow and toughen, becoming harder and harder to kill, until they become demifiends, half-fiends, more demon than human, and then fiends, and then, ultimately, champions of Dis.

This month's battle host contains:

  • Ariokh, Demioption on foot
  • Ariokh, Demioption on Canisinferni
  • Jezebel, Demiimaginifer
  • Jezebel, Demiimaginifer [pin up]*

The commander of the Persecutors of Var is Ariokh, a mighty demioption of the legion.

Ariokh, Demioption on Canisinferni

Available on foot or on canisinferni, armed with sword, axe and spear, and bearing light armour and a shield, Ariokh is a dangerous opponent for any enemy to face!

The demiimaginifer called Jezebel bears the imago of the immortal Emperor of Byzantia, Constantine, for her legion: with fiend helm or without, and bearing sword and axe, you also get a variant with shield.

Bareheaded Jezebel, Demiimaginifer

There's also a pin up version - see below for details!

Noctis and Hounds of Dis, Demibestiarius and Canisinferni Unit

Commanding a unit of five canesinferni, Noctis is a demibestiarius, a beast handler able to unleash the hounds of Infernus upon the enemies of the legion. Armed with whip and axe, he is also a handy fighter.

The bulk of the Persecutors of Var are the demilegionarii, of course. The incaendium known as In III Judas contains eight powerful warriors armed with sword and axe, wearing light armour, some fused of which is fusing to their bodies, making them even harder to kill.

There's also eight demiballistarii in the In V Barabas incaendium, demilegionarii that wield specially-made manuballistae, nasty little weapons that fire equally nasty bolts that can often be laced with hellfire. Don't get in the firing line of these guys!

Utterly brilliant, beautifully sculpted by Rafael, the demicanisarii are demilegionarii with lance and shield riding into battle upon the canesinferni. The unit known as In VI Orkus is a unit of five of these powerful warriors!

Who Are the Byzantii?

The Byzantii are the remnants of the Roman Empire in the east, the Byzantines, who have allied themselves with the Infernii to reconquer the lost lands of the western Roman Empire. In the 7th Century the Byzantines re-conquered what is now Italy and Rome, controlling much of the old western empire and forcing its Pope into exile, and in Darklands the Byzantii have expanded further into the south and east of Frankia and encroach upon southern Germania.

The well-disciplined and highly structured armies of the Byzantii bring legionarii and auxiliarii as well as the creatures of the bestiarii to battle in their bid to reconquer the west, but - thanks to their alliance with Infernus - can also boast the demilegionarii - half-man, half-demon warriors that are bigger, stronger and harder to kill than their human kin.

Legio II Var

Commanded by the venerable Titus Aurelius, the Second Legion of Var is based in Narbonensis, their capital Lugdunum in that region of south east Frankia first conquered by the Romanii centuries before and directly opposed to the Franks and their overlords, the Ysians of the far north and west.

Unfortunately for them the Legio II Var is one of the strongest legions in the west, for Constantine desires to expand his territory further and knows he can only do so with men and half-men, with demons and beasts: and so Titus' legion is one of the most important of all, blessed with strength far beyond those that hold the east.

You can learn more about the Byzantii on the Mierce Miniatures webstore and in the Lands of Darkness kindred guide!
