Jute Host Diary (October 10th - Eromanraed and Auga)
Hi there,
I'm in the process of raising a Jute Host and thought it is a nice project to share here (has been a bit silent lately).
So I will add my finished models to this gallery as I work through them.
This is going to be PIC-HEAVY!!!
For beginners I have started of with everyones favorite bug. THACALDAN
Managed to get some nice iridescent look on him. And am very happy with the outcome.
Hope you like that bugger as much as I do... sadly he has no place in my planned host before 1000 Gold... but we'll see.
Best Sven

Re: Jute Host Diary
Well, I admit, I've actually finished Thacaldan last week.
But this beauty has been finished just yesterday and I guess it's not bad to start this thread with a little extra content.
(Also I think the spider steals Thacaldan the show )
GOL GUL
Sorry for the reflections. Glossy surfaces are a pain to photograph, especially if you've got only direct light sources available.
The iridescent green fangs might look like the most fantasy part of it, but there's actually a spider with fangs like that and funny enough it is found in Britain. (Just ask google abot the "Green fanged spider")
Could you ask for a more appropriate valentine entry?

Re: Jute Host Diary (Feb 14th - Thacaldan and Gol Gul)
Oh I like those a lot,
Thaldacan is cool in a darker iridescent colour than mine (what paints did you use?)
and Gul Gol looks fab with that 'scream' tribute on his back

I love your thacaldan, he's extremely realistic. And the spider is quite scary ! Eager to see more...

Re: Jute Host Diary (Feb 14th - Thacaldan and Gol Gul)
Thanks a lot guys, glad you like them!
@ Orlando: I think we used the same approach. Metallic basecoat and then inks. For the basecoat I mixed vallejo metallic medium and black to get that deep darkness. Followed by green and violet inks and a final gloss varnish. Nothing too complex actually.
Also thumbs up for instantly spotting the classic reference on Gol Guls back.
@ Andrew: Thanks! Those bases are a damn lot of work and I had quite some problems with the water effect. So it makes me happy that you mentioned them.
Well, the stuff that comes next will be totally different to the bugs though...
Cheers Sven

Wow Sven, those bugs are magnificent.
I love the iridescent effect you went for, makes Thacaldan feel like a real beetle.
I don't even know where to start with Gol Gul... the scream markings on his back are a brilliant touch and those teeth are great. And I must thank you for that little pointer to the green fang spider, there really are some bizarre creatures in this world.
Lastly the bases, I just wish I had the skill and patience to make bases look that good, hats off to you for the great job you've done on these two.

Re: Jute Host Diary (Feb 14th - Thacaldan and Gol Gul)
Here they are!
DREAGUTHA
Painting ten of these guys simultaneously prooved quite tiresome TBH, but I love the sculpts!
Would like to mention, that all of them actually have glowing eyes, but it's very subtle and my crappy phone-camera just couldn't pic it up.
Hope you like them! Leave me a comment, if you do
Best Sven
Edit: Damn, I just realized that the pictures really aren't showing much of the verdigris... there's actually quite a lot going on...

Great work Sven.
You have really done these awesome sculpts justice!
If you write up a tutorial on how you do those bases on your blog let me know.

Lovely job on the dreaguth Sven.
Not sure if you intended it or not, but seeing them painted up like that brings back strong memories of the nâzgul (at least how they should have been). If you did intend it then kudos to you, you pulled it off magnificently.

@ Andrew: Well, thank you, but after seeing your Bog Beast I feel like a toddler being told by his dad that his crayon drawing looks awesome.
TBH a basing tutorial would probably just end up being one big advertisement for Secret Weapon Miniatures basing kits. Have a look at their stuff. It works great. (but is still a LOT of work)
@ James: Glad you like them too! Can't take that compliment on the nâzgul though, just wanted them filthy and dark.

It's 5:00 a.m. and being a sad tired little Ryflwehr our Lord has just kicked me out of a rousing ale house dream. Grab those weapons and fall in..
5:23 a.m. the Jutes arrive on the opposite side of the field..
5:24 a.m. I am so glad I didn't have the goat carcass... because then i would be leaking at both orifices in fear after seeing these..
and that my children is why Ieuan does not like the Jutes.

Re: Jute Host Diary (Feb 18th - Dreagutha)
The next haul of Jutes came in and I'm thrilled to hear your opinion on the
GASTA
Such a cool concept and one of the reasons that made me collect Jutes. Couldn't wait to get paint on them, as I worked out the color scheme quite a while ago.
I know the "robes" are supposed to be glowy stuff, but I textured them and painted them like the Dreaguthas' robes, as I absolutely needed my dead kings a bit Nazgul-ish and my whole army will be grisly dark
Oh... and: FIRST!

Fantastic work Sven! I love the dark colours, the rust effects and the thematic bases. It all fits nicely together.

Once again Sven you've produced a fantastic set of models. I may have said it before but your models are truly inspiring.

Re: Jute Host Diary (March 27th - Gasta)
Thanks a lot Andrew and James!
Here comes my first character:
HELDRED
Really like how the cape turned out. Slowly, but surely I'm getting close to a playable host.
Would love to hear your opinion.

Amazing Sven! I love the dark and gritty paint style, it really fits the Jute army theme. Excellent photos by the way. How about that group shot ?

Thanks Beire and JerzyK. Still waiting for a opportunity to set up the gaming table and take that army shot.
WIHTGAR
I'm using Wihtwald as champion and the champion as Wiht Thain (not yet full happy with the paintjob on this guy)
Sorry, pics kept turning out quite blury...

Re: Jute Host Diary (April 15th - Wihtgar)
They look good as a group. I think I will use similar swampy bases for my Jutes.
Did you consider shading the skulls and bones with let's say Sepia Ink? I mean rather glazing than washing. The bones are not so white, especially on undead warriors

Re: Jute Host Diary (April 15th - Wihtgar)
@JerzyK: Thanks for the comment.
I understand where you're coming from, but opposed to my regular bone formula I deliberately went for striking white bones on the animated undead.
For one I really like the contrast it creates and I wanted to have a difference between regular dead bones (see Heldreds base or the skulls on the belts of the Gasta and Dreagutha) and the undead.
Also, who says the magic can't freshen them up a bit..?
That being said, the pics are also quite overexposed where the white is concerned...

Re: Jute Host Diary (April 15th - Wihtgar)
Wow, that are some very nice Jutes - the dirty robes, the rusty weapons, great paintjobs and great bases everywhere. I have to say that my first thought after seeing the Whitgar (well, actually the second thought, the first thought was - "incredible Skeletons") was just like Jerzy´s - the Skulls seemed a little bit too clean and white, but as you´ve explained, it underlines the magic that animates them - especially when compared to the decorative skulls (good skulls, bad skulls - undead skulls, dead skulls).
Great Miniatures, thank you very much for sharing those pictures!

Re: Jute Host Diary (April 15th - Wihtgar)
Today I have some single minis for you aswell as some non-Mierce proxies, but more on that below.
AEtulla
This guy turned out better than I expected. Originally I only got him because Jutes just need a sorcerer, but when painting I realised what an awesome and atmospheric sculpt it is.
Wihtwald
Nothing all too special here. I exchanged the role of the Wihtgar Champion and Wihtwald, as I think the Champ looks mightier and was easier to convert to holding a sword.
Okay, now on to the special snowflakes:
For playtesting the Dwimor and Gast Cyning I converted my Dwimor Cyning from an Dark Age Shadow Elemental. A nice nightmare with some cool beetle elements. I modeled the head myself to fit the Jute theme:
Last but not least, I was gifted a Mourngul from Forge World for my birthday. I pondered a while what to do with it and while I actually really like Thrada and weird bat monsters it doesn't fit my picture of the Jutes, so this'll be my Nihtbat. I think it'll go well with the Ghula and Gryreghula.
Soooo... let's see what's next ^^

Re: Jute Host Diary (October 10th - Eromanraed and Auga)
Hooked once again!
It's been quite a while, but I came back to my Jutes and once again fell in love with the sculpts.
Took a bit of getting used to my techniques from back then again, but I think they turned out fine.
Eormanræd
Jute Forthain
Loved the art for that guy from day one, especially the helmed version. So happy we'll get the mounted version helmed as well, right Rob?
Auga
Dreaguth Deathbringer
Such a rad sculpt! Combines the classic grim reaper style with a brutal lantern-mace. Sounds like a great asset in the game too.
And the best part is, that they'll hit the tabletop soon!
Best Sven
P.S. Sorry, pics are a bit on the big side, forgot that they're diplayed at real size
