AndyS Trolls WIP

Postby AndyS » Mon Mar 04, 2013 1:21 pm

So here is my first ever WIP post!

The Trolls have been undercoated with Citadel black spray with white over the top. Small bursts at approx 45 degree angle and a little from below. This really brings out the detail!
My airbrush set arrived today, now I just have to wait for the paint and get some practice! I'm hoping that the tones of the undercoat will show through the airbrushed basecoat to help with shading.

That's it for now. I'll keep you posted!

OK, so I couldn't wait to get started with the airbrush once my paints had arrived. So with minimal practice I dived in with something I hoped would be easy. Or at least easy to fix if I messed up!

The Troll Vane!

Image

This was first airbrushed with vallejo canouflage black brown, then burnt umber and finally bright brass. All thinned with vallejo thinners at around 30%.
I think it's a reasonable base to start the highlights and weathering.

Next stop Troll flesh!

You're in luck Mercedes, next pics up now!

I base coated the trolls with Model Air Field Green and U.S. Light Grey on the belly.

Image

Then I continued with the standard bearer. Working into the flesh a little more to make the colour a little darker and blend the green and grey.

Image

I think the most difficult part will be the trolls back. I have added some shadows but it's a large area and needs lots more work!

Image

I also need to experiment more with the airbrush. find the happy medium between a good solid coverage and letting the 2 stage undercoat show through. All of the green is still quite light and nees to be a little darker and more solid. Something to do tonight!

Those look really good so far. If that's the result from a budget airbrush, compressor and a small amount of practice then I'm definitely ordering one today. Do you know the model number of the airbrush that came with your compressor?
Never mind, I checked your link in ks comments and it says the model in there.

The front looks really promising, and I agree that the back will be the most challenging, simply because it's such a big area with not too much details, so it could end up looking a bit flat. But I really dig the front thus far. :)

Considering you're an airbrush novice (and with many of us looking to get one) you're a great advertisement for those things. :D
That troll looks really nice, you can really see the effect of the dual primer coat, which I hadn't really expected.

Thanks for showing your work in progress, keep it up.

Also : Trolls are bloody massive.
Glad I have some Dragonkin and Rhinomen coming. ;)

Most impressive! My airbrush arrives Thursday. What did you use to cover the trolls belts when you sprayed? I've got so much to learn. I'm planning on using my airbrush to double prime, much like you did. Since I'll be using a darker green (vallejo tank green) would you recommend I thin it? It's air paint.

I didn't mask anything so the belts got some green on them. I used around 30% thinners. I found hard buying the paint on the net as they are shown as a light to dark shade. Difficult to tell the colour. Let us know how the tank green goes.

I can't find tank green in the model air range. The field green I used is quite dark on the chart but looks quite vibrant over the white!

Mmm, looking at the Tank Green I have at home, it might be a bit to dark for the trolls. It's close to Olive Green as a color, so there's some brown in there

I opted for the tank green because it looked lighter than the dark green on the website. I'm looking for a duller green than what Andy has, maybe almost like a grey/green, and I may do my trolls with slight variations in their skin tones. Not sure yet. Painting them all the same seems....blah. besides, we aren't all the same skin tone, are we? ;) I'm also thinking doing one in a bluish-grey. But I'm definitely glad I got an airbrush, that'll help with these big fellas. I ordered a small paint set from thewarstore.com and may get more. They were out of black primer though :/

To be honest the Field Green used is lighter and more yellow than expected. I am dulling it down with dark green glazes and leaving the brighter green as highlight. Seems to be a slow process! I have started painting other areas in order to get a better feel for the whole model. From doing that it is clear that I need to add more contrast into the trolls flesh, but not as much as one would normally have on a 30mm human.

More pics soon!

has anyone used the Model Air matt varnish? How does it compare to Army Painter anti-shine?

Don't worry. Looks like it's the same across all ranges now. Not very matt in my experience.

I use dullcote for display. But it's not at all protective. I'll have to use a varnish first, maybe vallejo, then dullcote over the top. Who knows, I may want to have a game with these at some point!

I use the Vallejo gloss varnish through the airbrush as my protective layer. Then a spray of testor's and you're done ;)

I know a guy (JY-Y) who has an awesome varnishtutorial. I'll see if i can dig it up.

I usually gloss first then testors. Though I'm not a fan of what testors (or any matt varnish) does to metals.

Army painter claim that their varnish keeps the look of the metal. I've used it but the nozzle clogged up with nearly a full can left! Other than that I thought it was good.

So 3 lovely new Trolls......

Try turning it upside-down and spraying; that cleared my clog. Another clog I cleared by taking off the nozzle and soaking it in hot water for a few minutes then spraying upside down.
