I have to go to the town of Stone in Staffordshire every week on a Wednesday for work. Today is the first time I've noticed what is on the railings at the top of the high street

That's what I figure

Done a quick search on the town and wikipedia threw up this info which I think is pretty cool.
Stone was the capital of Mercia in King Penda's day. Here is a link:

There is some dispute between Stone and Tamworth being the royal seat of Mercia... "The earliest person named in any records as a king of Mercia is Creoda, said to have been the great-grandson of Icel. Coming to power around 584, he built a fortress at Tamworth which became the seat of Mercia's kings. His son Pybba succeeded him in 593. Cearl, a kinsman of Creoda, followed Pybba in 606; in 615, Cearl gave his daughter Cwenburga in marriage to Edwin, king of Deira whom he had sheltered while he was an exiled prince."

Note that Edwin, whom Penda killed near us here at Mierce Towers, was married to Cearl's daughter...

Yeah, been reading the Wiki history this morning. Interesting stuff. Since I live 3 miles from Stone I'm going to stand in support of their claim to being the capital. Regardless of any other well reasoned arguments or supportive evidence

I wouldn't blame you for that ;o)

It may have been that Stone was the "capital" and Tamtun just a royal palace, who knows?
