If money is tight Prodrive Auto Spray Paint: Grey Primer from poundland also works fine
but i'd always test a new can on an empty plastic pot/bottle as you get the odd can with a duff nozzle that gives you a grainy finsh (which works fine on terrain, but not on minis)

The rope is actually super easy, white undercoat covered with Vallejo model air Wood (70.077) brush painted on. As it's so thin it almost acts like a wash and shades itself (especially on such large rope twists). I then do a tiny bit of highlighting with wood and a 'normal' white (pp/gw etc) and bin...
